Leadville, Colorado. ND (18xx). First National Bank, Check Proof Uncirculated.,A sought after "Gaucho" vignette observed on this Leadville, Colorado Blank Check Proof from the American Bank Note Company printed on heavy cardstock paper. This Gaucho vignette is very elusive in contrast to the other varieties of the vignette more common on US Obsoletes. This version does however make an appearance on the 500 Pesos from Argentina (Pick S569).
A vignette of a young girl at left could easily be either Baby Doe Tabor, or the Unsinkable Molly Brown, both of whom have deep ties to Leadville. Baby Doe Tabor, a rags to riches, then back to rags story was once the best dressed woman in the west, but died poor and was found frozen in a shack in Leadville. The Unsinkable Molly Brown, was a survivor on the Titanic who helped rescue people on the ship, and ultimately birthed her legend as a socialite turned hero.
The proof check itself is uncirculated, with the only found being in the selvage where the counterfoil would typically be severed.

,,
