1877-S Liberty Head Double Eagle. MS-62 (PCGS).,Otherwise satiny surfaces exhibits glints of semi-prooflike reflectivity that are most pronounced in the reverse field. Golden-orange in color with a sharp strike and eye appeal to spare. The 1877-S registered a mintage of 1,735,000 pieces, down some 138,000 pieces from the previous year. Face value equaled $34,700,000. Some portion of the mintage made it into overseas banking transactions, a familiar scenario -- and a blessing to later generations of numismatists. We estimate that 1,500 to 2,500 Uncirculated examples can be found today. Most of those, however, hover around the MS-60 and MS-61 grades. Many of the Mint State pieces known today are from European bank hoards that began to return to America in the 1950s.
