A tiny, old mark in the field before Libertys forehead readily identifies this as the Overton plate coin, used to illustrate the variety in the 1987 supplemental pamphlet as well as the 3rd through 5th (present) editions. Smooth surfaces and even wear contribute to overall exceptional eye appeal both in-hand and under a glass. The crack from the rim above star 6 is clear and extends just past the inner point into the field. Weakness at the upper reverse is seen across all specimens and should not be mistaken for friction. A truly gorgeous piece that demonstrates the ideal aesthetic of this grade level. <p>This die marriage was discovered relatively recently, having been identified by half dollar specialist Don Frederick in a New York coin shop in April 1974. Examples are very rare in any die state and even the finest known are in low VF condition, many with problems. The example included in the impressive Jules Reiver Collection was a heavily worn AG-3 (NGC), which alludes to the truly challenging nature of this variety. This is surely a significant offering for specialists!<p><em>Remarks from the Consignor: </em>This variety was not in the original Overton reference, so when it was offered to me I purchased it without hesitation! How exciting it was to have a variety that was unknown and soon after see it as the plate coin in the Overton Supplement!
