1806 Draped Bust Half Dollar. O-122, T-25. Rarity-6. Pointed 6, Stem Through Claw. Fine-12 (NGC).,A significant rarity of the series, this piece is largely dove-grey with suggestions of pewter and apricot scattered throughout. The surfaces are smooth to the naked eye, with just a few trivial marks apparent under scrutiny. A tiny scrape just graces a cloud at the upper right reverse, and a pair of circular indentations are visible in the upper left obverse field. Light cracks connect stars 3 through 6 on the obverse, in addition to clash marks visible at the date and Libertys bust. The reverse is more dramatically fatigued, showing a large break from below the eagles tail up through the shield<p>Just 21-22 examples of the O-122 variety are known, having been considered a Rarity-6+ variety until relatively recently. The present example is ranked as 17th finest known in Steve Tompkins pictorial Condition Census for the variety, though is mistakenly attributed to two Sheridan Downey Mail Bid Sales from the early 2000s. It was, in fact, purchased by the Sutton Court Collector from Downey in a private transaction sometime in the 1980s and has remained locked away in this cabinet ever since. It is finer than the Jules Reiver specimen (VG-10 NGC) and offers strong eye appeal to complement this profound rarity.,From the Sutton Court Collection of Early Half Dollar Varieties. Acquired privately from Sheridan Downey in the 1980s.,
