1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 54-k, W-5295. Rarity-3. Serpent Head. VF-35 (PCGS).,113.9 grains. A potentially very interesting coin for its die state. In the Siboni-Howes-Ish reference, nothing other than a "perfect" die state are recorded for the "k" reverse. On this coin there is what appears to be a die crack that extends from the second vertical shield line to E in the legend. Further to the right of this "crack" are what are clearly fine planchet cracks that are well hidden in the shield lines. Given the circulation wear seen on this coin, it has become difficult to determine whether this is a planchet crack or a die crack. If the latter, this coin could be a very rare die state of the well studied and very popular Serpent Head die combination. Glossy medium brown surfaces show even circulation, light marks, and a full strike that is centered toward the left of both obverse and reverse. A technically very interesting specimen of a this popular Guide Book type.,Ex J.D. Parsons, March 18, 1983; our sale of the Dr. Gordon Shaw Collection, March 2017, lot 322.,
