1788 Massachusetts Cent. Ryder 13-I, W-6370. Rarity-7. Period after MASSACHUSETTS. Fine-12.,163.4 grains. Neatly holed through CH of MASSACHUSETTS, this coin exhibits steely brown, lightly granular surfaces whose high points have been worn to a pleasing smoothness on both sides. In fact, this coin saw extensive circulation after holing, as the extruded lips of the hole has been worn down and is no longer sharp. All design motifs and legends are complete and bold, though the M on the reverse is a trifle faint. This was a lucky find by Mike at the C4 Convention at the November 2015 Baltimore show, as only nine pieces are recorded by Massachusetts copper expert Michael Packard. Conspicuously absent from the Partrick Collection, which had amazing Massachusetts coppers, and understandably absent from the Norweb and Ford collections, whose core Massachusetts collections were amassed before the discovery of this variety. We sold Ted Craiges cleaned Very Fine example for$18,800 in our January 2013 Americana Sale; it was probably collected in the1960s, and his collector envelope read in part "Unique. Unlisted, unpublished, and unknown combo," offering a partial explanation of why the Ryder 13-Idie marriage is still extraordinarily rare today. The next owner of the Demling13-I will be lucky to have such a pretty example of this this rarity.,From the Michael Demling Collection of Massachusetts Cents.<p>,
