Proof-60 (NGC).,<strong>Obv:</strong> A head of Liberty faces left, the design reminiscent of the popular Washlady motif of the year, although the hair is arranged differently and is much shorter at the back. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST is above, 13 stars are arranged at the border seven left and six right, and the date 1879 is below. <strong>Rev:</strong> An eagle with spread wings clutches an olive branch in its right talon and three arrows in its left talon. A laurel wreath tied with a bow at its base encircles the lower portion of the eagle with the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM inscribed directly in the field above the head. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is above and the denomination ONE DOLLAR is below. This is a brilliant specimen with an overall sharp strike and modest contrast between reflective fields and satiny devices. Light reverse hairlining explains the Proof-60 grade from NGC, although the obverse appears smooth enough to support a Choice rating.<p>Patterns of this type are attributed to Chief Engraver William Barber with examples known in silver, copper and white metal, the final-listed variant of which is unique.
