Authorized by the Act of June 24, 1937, and designed by William Marks Simpson, this half dollar type commemorates the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Antietam. Known as the Battle of Sharpsburg in the South, this engagement took place on September 17, 1862, as part of the Maryland Campaign in the Civil War.
