The reverse inscription, presented within a laurel wreath, is hand engraved and reads: TO / JOHN DONALD / SEAMAN / OF THE BRITISH / STEAMSHIP RUEL, / IN RECOGNITION OF HIS HEROIC / SERVICES IN EFFECTING THE RESCUE / AT SEA ON NOVEMBER 10, 1917 / OF THE MASTER AND CREW / OF THE / AMERICAN / GOVERNMENT / BARGE NO. 5. The hinged pin-back hanger is also gold, and is inscribed E PLUR(IBU)S UNUM, with a federal shield superimposed.
