1927 National Institute of Arts and Letters Medal. Cast Gold. 57 mm. 125 grams. By Adolph A. Weinman. Baxter-176, var. MS-66 (NGC).,Awarded to William M. Sloane (1850-1928), well known American educator and historian. He served as a professor at both Princeton and Columbia universities, was president of the American Historical Association and, as a member of the International Olympic Committee, founder of the United States Olympic Commission -- accompanying the American athletes to the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. Differing from the occasionally seen bronze version of this medal by the addition of TIFFANY & CO. / 18 KT GOLD / <em>M</em> below the reverse inscription. Beautifully finished yellow-gold surfaces with no blemishes of note. The original leather and fabric presentation case is included with this lot.<p>The august National Institute of Arts and Letters, now known as the American Academy of Arts and Letters, included Augustus Saint-Gaudens among its seven founders; Samuel Clemens was another.
