Undated (1860s) Oval Plaque of William H. Seward. Bronze. 126 mm x 102 mm. Nearly As Made.,High relief bust of Seward facing left, with no inscription other than W.H. SEWARD below the truncation of the bust. The reverse is blank with the exception of a reversed and incuse image of the bust. There is an integral loop for suspension at the top. Seward (1801-1872) was governor of New York, a U.S. senator, and secretary of state under Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson. Even so, he may be best remembered for being stabbed and nearly killed in the Abraham Lincoln assassination conspiracy. Also of note was his participation in what was called "Sewards Folly" -- the controversial purchase of Alaska from Russia for two cents per acre.,,
