1819 (ca. 1830) Series Numismatica Medal. Washington Issue. Bronze. 41.9 mm. Musante GW-100, Baker-131A. MONACHII Edge. MS-64 BN (PCGS).,This splendid example exhibits some marbling of rose-red patina to otherwise copper brown surfaces, the former color largely confined to the reverse. Light carbon along the lower obverse border and around the truncation of the bust is noted, but otherwise the surfaces are smooth with no significant blemishes. The Series Numismatica Universalis Virorum Illustrium (numismatic series of universally illustrious men) was started in 1818 by French sculptor and medalist Amedee Durand. Although the first medals were struck in the Paris Mint, restrictive policies and rising costs at that facility prompted Durand to move the series to the Munich Mint in 1826. The Washington medals was reissued from the facility c.1830 using a new obverse die with Washingtons name Germanicized as WASINGTON. The Munich edge mark MONACHII also identifies these strikings, as here. Cataloged by Musante (2016) as scarce, an example of this type certified MS-64 BN by NGC realized $2,291.25 in Heritages Summer FUN auction of July 2017.,,
