1805 Washington Eccleston Medal. Bronze. 75.8 mm. By Thomas Webb for Daniel Eccleston. Musante GW-88, Baker-85. Mint State.，Struck on cast planchets, the Eccleston medals normally exhibit a multitude of tiny pits in the planchet, typically most easily seen in the fields. On some high grade example there are so many that their presence disrupts the natural reflectivity of the surfaces of these medals. Not so in this case. There is abundant natural reflectivity and even considerable multicolored iridescence evident on both sides. The pits are discernible under magnification, but certainly not at all disruptive. The usual die break on the reverse is present, seen on all but the first few strikes, as well as the normally seen rust spot on Washingtons nose. Reddish-brown mahogany patina overall with hints of faded red in the legends, this is a gorgeous example of this impressive medal.<p>Daniel Eccleston was a noted British Quaker eccentric who visited America and was Washingtons guest at Mount Vernon. He was a fervent admirer of Washington and at the same time of Native American rights, and both concepts are expressed on this medal. Washington medal cataloger William S. Baker called Washingtons armor "a singular conceit," but it was actually contemporary medallic shorthand for a victorious general.，From The Howard B. Teich Collection.
