1799 (ca. 1800) Westwood Medal. Second Reverse. White Metal. 40.1 mm. Musante GW-83, Baker-80. MS-63 (PCGS).,The obverse is light gray in the center, with pale silver and delicate gold around the periphery. The reverse, by contrast, is a fairly even light silver and pale yellow-gold in color. The fields on both sides are bright, reflective, and that on the reverse is nearly fully mirrorlike. Well struck, with good sharpness showing in the centers. Some light rim disturbances are noted, and these were from removing the medal from what may have been its original box (see below). Struck from a heavily rusted state of the obverse die. From our May 2004 sale of the John J. Ford,. Jr. Collection, Part II, where it was described, in part, as:"Described by Mr. Ford as This piece was in a wooden, fabric-lined, circular box, the bottom half of which had to be destroyed to free the medal. Very rare: as noted, the cataloguer has seen only five of these and Mr. Ford thought there might be five known." The 1999 edition of the Rulau-Fuld reference on Washingtoniana also reports that only four or five white metal impressions from these dies are known. The second reverse is distinguished from the first by having a J instead of an I in JUNE and no periods after the word PEOPLE and below 68.,Ex F.C.C. Boyd estate; our (Stacks) sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part II, May 2004, lot 118. Lot tag included.,
